CrimeFinder is a map driven analysis tool that allows you to view historical crime data to see which crimes have impacted your area over 13 years, and to what degree.
Using both NSW crime and ABS population stats from 1996 to 2008 – CrimeFinder allows you to analyse crime rates across 24 categories of offences for any local government area in NSW.
With CrimeFinder you can answer questions such as:
- Which area in Sydney had the highest crime rate for household break and enters in 2008?
- Where was the biggest drop in car theft from 1996 to 2008?
- Are there any obvious trends in homicides?
- What’s the current crime rate in my area and has it gone down or up in the last few years?
FEATURES
- Dynamic, interactive mapping of all NSW council areas and crime stats
- Dynamic, interactive charts
- Dynamically generated geo-temporal animation *
* You’ll have to try this to find out what it actually means…
NOTES
This project will become open source after the competition. Keep an eye out for CrimeFinder on http://www.codeplex.com
To view the site, you’ll need Microsoft Silverlight 3.0 installed. If it isn’t installed: When you first open CrimeFinder you’ll be prompted to install Silverlight 3.0. If this doesn’t happen, you can manually install it by following the installation procedure here.

Love the design of this. One thing to note for Chrome users is they may not want to leave a window with this open running in the background while they’re doing other stuff. After going to the site, hitting the play button on the default selection and then hitting the stop button about half way through, my CPU usage remained consistently high, even after I’d stopped it from playing. I checked in task manager and it was all coming from the tab with CrimeFinder open in Chrome. Tested in Internet Explorer though and didn’t see this problem. Can anyone else with Chrome verify if they’re having the same issue?
Thanks for the feedback… certainly no CPU lockup issues in testing with IE and Firefox.
I’ll do some testing tonight in Chrome. Possibly a Silverlight compatibility issue… Who do I blame, Google or Microsoft?
Safari, Firefox and IE are all OK.
But Chrome had the CPU going up and down well after the initial load had settled down, let alone after the animation had ceased.
MS say they don’t support Chrome yet as “they only support browsers with significant market share”.
Just for that I’ll blame both MS and Google for this issue. Try getting along boys for a change!
Yeah, I’m sure Microsoft had nothing to do with writing a plugin that maxs out CPU on the competitors browser :p
