  1. This looks like an excellent tool. I hope you creative and clever possums would consider including information about the locations of not-for-profit and community organisations and particularly those that involve volunteers. This would really be helpful for people looking to volunteer because they can simply hop on to FridgeMate and find the geographic locations of places where they can volunteer. It would take a bit of research and not all the data would be immediately available but it would still be an excellent addition to Fridgemate, I think!

  2. Thanks for the feedback. I think the volunteering idea is great. It could also be extended to places where people can give something – like Salvation Army drop off locations or blood services. That fits in well with ByteBack etc.

Do you know of anywhere we can get this kind of data (under the right licensing)?

    • There are different listings for not-for-profit and community organisations – they are in the hundreds of thousands all around Australia, with around 120,000 in Victoria alone! I’d be interested to see how we can work with you on the volunteer-involving ones in Victoria. Around 300 of them are members and another 300 registered with us but are not financial members.

That’s a lot of organisations!! There are a couple of options – we can give you the code after the comp closes (although I will need to check all the licensing terms first) or we can find a way for you to add data directly depending on your own privacy obligations. Anyway, shoot me an e-mail on robert@creativepossums.net.

Great idea. This is probably a good model for a number of list making solutions -some broad and others specialised. I particularly like the idea of this having a purpose… to create a list to stick on your fridge. Well done.

Nice one! great use of drag and drop, and I agree with James, the purpose is a good addition. Otherwise I’d feel like “well, I’ve got the locations, now what?”

The list of addresses below the map could be in two columns, so the map could be made bigger.

Great use of the data :)

Seems very similar to my Victoria Online. With fridgemate when i enter and address and drag something over (medicare for example) it shows on the map, but it only shows 1 location. This doesn’t really give much of a choice because the closest one isn’t always the best one. Is there a way to get more than one result?

Sorry, missed the question. No, there isn’t currently a way to return more than one result because the idea is to remove the clutter – it’s a bit of a balancing act though and more data would be good so a future enhancement would definitely be a way to page through locations while still retaining the simple UI.

Great app guys – really really useful.

Something like this is great for people who are renters and keep moving about.

I have printed mine out for my fridge!

  8. Great work on this tool.

This would be extremely helpful for a lot people in community housing.

Maybe even getting this printed on a magnet so that each community housing has a permanent fridgemate for the occupants to refer to.

Love the video tutorial – even though its easy enough without it :)

I like the way its done. However, I can’t see the value this site adds. I can do all this with whereis.com. In fact, they list a significantly larger variety of locations (e.g. banks, supermarkets, petrol stations).

Thanks for the feedback. WhereiS is an excellent product, the difference is that fridgemate is driven by your location whereas WhereiS is driven by the location type. For example, you can’t see police stations and schools on the same map in WhereiS. That said, it would be great if we had access to more information such as libraries.

      • Just to add to Robs point.

We didn’t want to make it based on commercial services like Banks, ATMS etc. (even though that data would be nice to have :) ) rather services provided by the Government to assist the general public for example Medicare Offices, Legal Assistance etc.

Also we wanted to give the ability for a user to make a customisable list which could be reused for future reference. Which, correct me if I’m wrong, WhereIS doesn’t currently do?

I think you should be able to “drop” onto the map rather than underneath it. It took me >5 tries to figure that one out. It was far more natural for me to drag onto the map.

We had a few people test and that didn’t come up as an issue, but it shouldn’t be too hard to implement (famous last words!) as a future enhancement.

  13. Wow!

Ranked down to 2.9, this was at 4.0 3 days before the competition ended.

Looks like the voting exploits have even affected other entries in negative ways.
