What a fabulous way to find everything local. It would enable a lot more interaction with members of the community.

    Hi Everyone,
I’ve always wanted to make a mashup :D
I went along to #OAHACK over the weekend where Pamela Fox from Google showed us how to create a map using Open Layers!

It looked really awesome so I decided to learn Google Maps to create a mashup about your local environment! Thanks to Open Australia & the Google Volunteers for organising the event!

This is my first ever mashup using Google Maps! Hope you find it useful & most importantly a fun way to connect to your local community!! :D

Wow, great idea! And nicely implemented too :) 4.5/5 from me! Well done.

  4. Corey WIlliams says:

Great concept! I really like the ability to place your own marker as well, very interactive and a great way to gather data from different sources. I think if every state had their schools listed this would be great but I understand there wasn;t that many data sets to choose from. I agree with Thomas on the 4.5 :) .

    How WOW!
    Great Mash up!
I’m glad to see someone taking the initiative.
    Very nice!

Fanastic idea! This idea could be a massive hit with the world set on being green!! Rating a suburb on its green credentials would be a hit with potential buyers or even those who want to clean up their neighborhood!

Found the bike rack locator very helpful. And its great being able to locate GOOD organic food shops within seconds. Kudos to the creator, great job!

  9. Jonathan says:

Dude technology blows my mind these days and this is THE bomb!!! So handy knowing where those bike racks are because it’s so hard finding parking spots.

    Great job!!! =)

  10. Ben says:

Simple and easy to follow Tammy.

    Your the best :D

  11. Rob says:

This is really a great idea, fantastic effort Tammy :D

Another idea could be some recycle bin locations? Whilst smashing a cold beverage on a hot day I can drink safely knowing the location of the nearest bin!

    • Tammy Butow says:

      Hi Rob,

What a great idea! I will send in a request for the location of recycle bins :D

      Thanks!
      Tammy

  12. Kim says:

This is such a fantastic idea! Can’t wait for you to make a NSW version so I can use it as a teaching tool for community studies!! Well done!

    • Tammy Butow says:

Hey Kim! I have requested the NSW set of schools data and will add this after the competition is finalised! I have also thought it would be great to include local community centres and skate parks! If you can think of anything else students would like to see please add it to the forum on the site!! — you can access the forum by clicking on the lightbulb on the racearoundyourblock.com site! :D
      Thanks!
      Tammy

    Great mashup Tammy!

I was actually listening to an interview with Lars Rasmussan (Danish guy who with his brother created Google Maps)on radeioQ (QANTAS) as I flew home tonight – he was describing the evolution of online maps over the last decade, nice to see another new itteration of their use here!

High Five on the web-site guys

This is fantastic and everyone today is looking at some way of being ‘green. Even if it is only in a small way. Bugger Melbourne, Brisbane or Sydney….lets go global.

I tried out racearoundyourblock.com on my phone today….Nokia E71 it loaded extremely quick, was easy to use and provided me with useful and informative data! I think this idea is a great way for local communitites to promote environmentally friendly ideas and the competition element it touches on with the green points makes it tantalising for green users :) …… GREAT WORK TAMMY!!!
